Madan leaves Kathmandu for Lhasa to earn a living, leaving Muna and his ageing mother behind. Devkota wrote it in the metre of the songs sung in the fields so that it could be carried by heart, and it has been: the poem is recited at weddings, at funerals and by porters on the trail.

Laxmi Prasad Devkota
Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota (1909–1959) is the great poet of modern Nepali. He wrote Muna Madan in the jhyaure folk metre so that people who had never read a poem could sing one; it has never been out of print.
